~ From time immemorial, Kashi has been sanctified by the divine and
spiritual light of the Jyotirlinga of Lord Vishwanath.
Kashi was considered the Forest of Bliss where Lord Shiva appeared as a Jyotirlinga. According to the Skanda Purana (16.25-35) narrative, Sun advised Shiva to reside in this region forever even at the moment of great dissolution leading to an Avimukta Kshetra, which is un-manifested or eternal. Upon visiting the Mahadeva in Kashi, according to the Linga Purana, one is purified of sins.
This mural painting creates a lasting visual impact in a metaphorical sense, drawing inspiration from the religious significance of the location of Kashi and its presiding deity, Shiva. The painting has Lingam in the centre and opens to a magnificent floral pattern that is suggestive of the Kerala Mural painting. The viewer is reflected by the Lingam composed of a mirror, which connects him to the cosmic truth and universal values of bliss and liberation. The brightness of the colours is symbolic of the "Kash," or light of the cosmos, which illuminates the region of Kashi. Suresh K. Nair, the artist, subtly recreates a fleeting encounter and a lasting memory by briefly re-engaging the viewer with the philosophical essence of Varanasi. Suresh K. Nair, who received training in traditional Kerala Mural painting at Guruvayur, skilfully combines the intricacy of the Kerala Mural with the imagery of Kashi, resonating with the vibrant Indian tradition of art practice in a contemporary language.
